Whirligig
When I was studying Mechanical Engineering I became very interested in the ‘venturi effect’ – this is the phenomenon by which airflow can be made to speed up by being channeled and compressed through a reduced diameter tube.
Sometime later I became equally interested in good quality coffee and loved the release of flavour and aroma from the broken bean – the sensory equivalent of splitting the atom!
So a bit later still, I had the notion of bringing these two passions together in the form of a coffee mill which was shaped in such a way as to be expressive of the function, easy to hold and elegant as an object of desire.
I’m told that this design has become part of the morning ritual for its fans which makes me smile… and it reminds me of my Grandpa who coined the name Whirligig when I first showed him the prototype.
