Invented for cooks with a passion for exploration, we captured an East meets West design philosophy that blends traditional and modern forms by combining circular and elliptical lines to create a uniquely elegant and practical silhouette that pours from either side.

Ali’s vibrant Bauhaus colour palette delivers a perfect complement to the ergonomic shapes and hints at a new language in cuisine – it’s no longer the casserole or the braiser or the saucepan or the roaster, it’s simply the Red, Blue or Yellow pan…childs play!

Oh, and in the studio we also invented a new word ‘Versatiron’ to celebrate the versatility of cast iron and give us an original, meaningful and impactful brand identity!

I am a ‘tree hugger’ and love every type of copse, wood, forest or hedge with a deep passion.

I also love woodworking, the workshop and cabinet making so find myself balancing a respect for timber with a desire to ensure it is used responsibly to good effect by people that know how to make things of lasting value.

This means that my designs need to be elegantly proportioned and efficiently constructed so that they will truly last a lifetime from both a style and function point of view.

Part of that process is to choose the right timber to suit the products and in this case the shapes that I wanted to produce seemed to fit perfectly with the virtues, colour and grain of Walnut. So that was the natural choice, and inevitably the collection name.

Walnut – furniture of simplicity and longevity.

At a party given by The V&A Museum I was introduced to the new and vivacious Managing Director of Fired Earth named Beverly Nielsen.

Beverley told me that she wanted to expand Fired Earth into some dynamic categories and asked if I would like to visit their HQ in Banbury to talk about furniture.

I jumped at the chance and soon found myself on a whirlwind tour of furniture makers located across Europe from The majestic Jura region of France to the pretty town of Clitheroe in Lancashire – different locations and languages but very much the same traditions of craftsmanship, quality, sustainability and attention to detail…nothing was ever rushed yet everything was always on time and beautifully made.

I created Square Peg in homage to my Arts&Crafts design heroes such as William Morris and CFA Voysey who taught us so much about enduring tradition married to new directions and I am truly proud of everyone at Fired Earth who contributed to the success of the programme – not least Beverley who was a true champion of my work.

I was introduced to Boss Design by my friends at John Lewis who told me that if I wanted to create contemporary furniture in the UK then Boss truly were BOSS!

So I duly arrived at their state of the art factory in the West Midlands full of hope and expectation …and I wasn’t disappointed.

We worked closely together on several cutting edge concepts and settled in the end on a collection which became known as Luge because it looked like it was going places fast and at the time Amy Williams had just taken gold at the Winter Olympics on her Skeleton bob – sort of going headfirst on a Luge!

The end result is really a marriage of my passion for English Arts & Crafts with the Boss signature of high technology production and matchless attention to detail. Truly a winning combination.

So when I was commissioned by John Lewis to create a new collection of British made upholstery I couldn’t help a slight play on words by invoking my favourite period style of sofa and morphing the venerable Chesterfield into the contemporary ‘Chester’.

Aided and abetted by a certain Mr Dan Cooper – one of the most talented buyers at John Lewis – the new collection was a real winner and continues to be in demand to this day…a future Chesterfield perhaps?!
