This was fun!

I had worked with WPP earlier in my career when developing my Wedgwood collections and their team at The Partners proposed the “Wedgwouldn’t…?” campaign – a brilliant piece of witty and intelligent marketing.

So, when they approached me with a commission to design the Diamond Jubilee teapot for HRH The Queen I was pretty chuffed and loved the whole process.

We worked on the crown using 3D CAD and printing techniques to ‘map’ the real thing and then make a miniature version in gold to which we then added diamonds, meanwhile we made the body & spout in Sterling Silver with the best Sheffield craftsmen.

We tested the finished item to make sure it brewed and poured as only a teapot fit for a queen should and although nobody knows if it ever gets used at Royal tea parties it stands in its own glass box in Buckingham Palace, ready to do service whenever the call should come from on high?

As a footnote, I then designed a miniature ‘tea-ball’ which is quite a bit cheaper, so everyone can join the party!

“I had never been on a cruise before (but I’ve always loved boats!) so when I got a call from P&O Cruises asking if I could go to Southampton to meet them about their new Superliner Ventura I was immediately interested.

They explained that Ventura would be the biggest ship they had ever built with over 3000 passengers and they needed me to design everything to go inside her from stem to stern! So..slightly in trepidation I set to work on everything from the cutlery, glassware, ceramics, silverware, kettles, tea pots, trays to the..loo brushes, even adding a signature glass sculpture to the atrium.

It was a really fabulous project and I loved travelling to Italy for the fit out process – even managing to rope my best friend Shane in to help erect the sculpture on board. I took the family on a 2 week cruise that Summer and needless to say we had the best holiday ever!” – Nick

“When I first visited the historic Spode factory in Stoke on Trent I thought it was the most beautiful industrial premises I had ever seen complete with unique red brick chimney down which the iconic Spode brand read vertically.

I was there on a mission to reconnect the company’s history with the blockbuster Art Deco exhibition at the V&A museum and I was awestruck by the Aladdins cave of vintage moulds which existed in the Spode archive.

More to the point I was thrilled to be introduced to their progressive development team who shared my desire to create a new range of designs which would be true to the innovative traditions of Spode (it was here that the first English Bone China products were produced after a battle of will between the venerable Josiah Spode and his namesake and arch rival Josiah Wedgwood), whilst embracing modernity and cutting edge British style.

The results were elegantly proportioned, sharply detailed and evocatively spirited objects of desire which went on to be featured in the museum and sold around the world – a truly satisfying collaboration.” – Nick
